Mirrabook Rail Services was established in July 2004 for
the purpose of running commuter/tourist services on the now closed
Casino-Murwillumbah rail line and possibly from Coffs Harbour to Brisbane.
Since May 2003, a number of options have been investigated
regarding rail services on the Murwillumbah rail line. Much has transpired in
that time, most notably the Carr government’s removal of the XPT service and
also taking the line out of service as at 17 May 2004. This decision has not
been welcomed by the Northern Rivers communities and resulted in a NSW State
Parliament Upper House Enquiry into the closure of the line and also a
feasibility study to determine the possibility of running a local country
commuter service.
Mirrabook Rail Services has contributed to both the NSW Upper
House Parliamentary Enquiry into the Closure of the Casino/Murwillumbah Line and the
subsequent Feasibility Study into a rail commuter service, including extensive submissions with the
objective of returning the rail line to active service and establishing a
privately run passenger service on the line.
